Every year, delivery rooms see a distinct uptick in business in the last days of December, said Dr. Melissa Bailey, an obstetrician at Baylor Medical Center.
“Tax planning is a lot of it for some people, and for some people, it has to do with the deductible on their insurance policies,” she said.
The latter consideration is what motivated Kylie Edwards, 26, of Melissa, who scheduled induced labor for this morning, a little less than two weeks before her Jan. 10 due date.
She said she and her husband decided to schedule an early birth after a battery of tests and consultations with her doctor convinced her that the procedure was safe and that their baby’s health would not be affected.
Beyond that, she said, “it was a practical decision. If we would have the child after Jan. 1, we would have to re-meet our deductible and then start paying our 20 percent on top of that.”
