Today would have been the day that Digital killed the Analog Star.

Today would have been the day that Broadcast Networks around the country would have flipped the switch on their analog transmission and broadcast completely digital. But with Congress, who feel its their job to spend even more money, are delaying the mandate to June 17th.

There is a loophole which I’m sure is going to cause problems in the coming months. It states that broadcasters can choose to go full on HD and are not required to keep broadcasting their analog singles. This could have current over-the-air viewers slowly losing their channel choice over the next few months.

The reasoning behind this all is the Government Sponsored Coupon Program that shells out two $40 rebates to buy converter boxes for those still stuck getting their television from rabbit ears. The overall extension of this program is going to cost $650 million.

Engadget has a great article about this all and the links are below.
