Gizmodo – Repair work on the Large Hadron Collider is making serious progress, with a test run of particle beams already completed. Scientists are hoping to attempt full world-ending experiments next month.

The results of that first test, a run of particle beams through the 17-mile tunnel, showed the machine in perfect working order. The scientists are hoping to have the LHC up and running as good as new in November, which after careful research I conclude is less than a week away.

BBC – The 32-year-old man of Algerian descent was one of two brothers detained in the south-east town of Vienne on Thursday.

Police believe they had been in contact over the internet with people linked to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, and had been planning attacks in France.

Cern’s Large Hadron Collider is aiming to recreate conditions of the Big Bang.

The organisation confirmed that a physicist working at its site had been arrested “under suspicion of links to terrorist organisations”, and said it was helping the French police with their investigation.

Star – IRISH brewer Arthur Guinness created the drink, aged 27, in 1752.

He began brewing the black stuff at a small base in Leixlip, County Kildare, before moving operations to the now famous St James Gate brewery in Dublin.

He took out a 9,000-year lease at £45 annually on the city site – and it’s still used today as a museum dedicated to the stout.

Guinness exports from the UK were banned in 1944 as Britain fought the Nazi. The ban was not lifted until 1947, two years after the war ended.

The perfect pour should take 119.5 seconds and be done at a 45 degree angle. It should ideally be served at 6C.

Guinness contains only 198 calories a pint. That is less than most light beer, wine, orange juice, or even light milk.

Almost 2billion pints of Guinness are sold worldwide every year.

Telegraph.co.uk – Alas, when the PM settled down to begin watching them the other night, he found there was a problem.

The films only worked in DVD players made in North America and the words “wrong region” came up on his screen. Although he mournfully had to put the popcorn away, he is unlikely to jeopardise the special relationship – or “special partnership”, as we are now supposed to call it – by registering a complaint.

China angry at Britain for “stealing” artifacts 150 years ago; takes number, waits behind Greece, Italy, Egypt

BBC News – The strong statement said China did not recognize the 31m euro (£28m, $39m) sale of the bronze rat and rabbit.

It also ordered tighter checks on artifacts that Christie’s auction house takes into or out of China.

The bronzes were sold as part of the estate of late French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent.

Option announces uCAN remote data access for iCON USB modems

Engadget – Fresh from Barcelona, the wireless modem gurus at Option have announced their new uCAN software platform. To be implemented across the entire iCON modem lineup, the software allows users to run applications (such as Open Office) from their USB modem and interact directly with documents situated on their workstation at home. You can also have those apps you might need to use in a pinch — such as Skype — preconfigured with all your data. If that weren’t enough, the device sports something called “Zero Footprint” technology, which is designed to ensure that “no trace of activity is left on the host computer, running either Windows XP, Windows Vista or Mac OS, when the device is disconnected.” You can even launch a browser from the thing, keeping all those passwords and cookies safely off of whichever machine you happen to be borrowing. Well after reading a little more from Engadget and the Option website this looks like a really cool deal if you happen to need access to your files but forgot your laptop. Almost feels kind of James Bond sort of gadget.

They were stolen from a protected area of Loch Sligachan where a farmer had exclusive rights.

David Oakes, from Sconser, has now offered a £1000 reward for information leading to a successful prosecution.

He said: “A lot of the top restaurants want the really big scallops.”

He added that protected areas attracted thieves because divers and dredgers had caused over-fishing.

Approximately 2 million watched Barack Obama’s Presidential Inauguration on Monday, January 20th. The record crowd crammed into the National Mall composed of the Capitol, White House and Lincoln Memorial. Obama spoke of the resiliency of Americans and the United States of America as it deals with tough economic times, high unemployment rates and international turmoil all across the globe. Obama emphasized that his administration would lead by example by taking full accountability for its actions and by improving dialog with nations and peoples all across the world.
