Would you pay almost $14,000 to hear a local band play a cover version of Tom Petty’s hit “I Won’t Back Down”?

Randy White might, and he’s not happy about it.

White’s problems began Aug. 10, 2007. It was a Friday night, and a crowd came to his club, called Randzz, to drink beer, play pool and maybe listen to the band.

At least one person listened – closely. The band’s playlist, which included hits by Stone Temple Pilots and Bob Sege r, got that person’s attention.

About 10 months later, several music publishers filed a lawsuit against White, accusing him of copyright infringement. They argued that he was allowing bands to play copyrighted songs without their permission or the proper license. In late May, a federal judge ruled in their favor.

White said he plans to appeal. “I just don’t feel I’m responsible for it,” he said. “They should be talking to the bands.”

Rosanna Tomack, 62, is suing Joseph Cicack in a New York Supreme Court after an incident that took place in 2006, when the boy was 8 years old, the New York Post reported Monday.

Edmond Chakmakian, Tomack’s lawyer, said his client required spinal fusion surgery and has been unable to return to work since Cicack ran into her and knocked her down at the city’s Public School 94.

“It’s a legitimate case,” Chakmakian told the Post. “It’s not silly.”

The lawyer said his client is seeking damages from the insurance policy covering the boy’s parents’ home.

Federal prosecutors say 39-year-old Merlin Mireles drove a Mexican woman and her two children from Texas to Metairie after they illegally entered the U.S. Mireles and his mother, 66-year-old Gloria Mireles, allegedly gave the woman and her family places to live in exchange for her performing housekeeping chores.

Gloria Mireles also allegedly helped the woman get a part-time job and helped enroll her children in public schools.

A three-count indictment handed up Friday against Mireles and her son includes a conspiracy charge punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Merlin Mireles was a border officer assigned to Port of Progreso, Texas.

The council unanimously approved the ordinance that holds businesses and individuals accountable for unlawfully discarded trash or litter.

City of Norman Utilities Director Ken Komiske said the littering ordinance targets those who discard trash inside, or next to, common dumpsters used by several businesses. Business owners on Campus Corner asked city officials to help them find a solution to the overflow of trash surrounding shared dumpsters on Campus Corner, he said.

Link

I don’t understand how they can enforce this or if this is just a campus corner law. I could not imagine how they are going to fine someone say .. in a apartment building where most residents share one tiny dumpster that always has someone’s discarded sofa, lawn chairs, 6 cylinder engine, BBQ Grill, various unbroken down 40pk cases of Keystone light or Bud Dry, televisions, tires, baby crib, street signs, construction barriers, and various dead animals. I’m only listing what I found when I lived in a apartment complex in Norman. And I’m not kidding either. People in Norman drink Keystone and Bud Dry by the box load. Its sick.
