CNNGO – Tateishi Burger is an old-school hamburger joint with a faux-modern twist: Patrons can order burgers through a coin-operated ‘vending machine.’ In a country obsessed with vending machines this one takes the love affair to a new, albeit technically inferior level. Pop in ¥100 and out drops the Tateishi Burger. Plop in ¥300 to the orange vending machine nearby, and a Tateishi Royal Burger with pickles and bacon rises from the bottom.

Just don’t try to order two at a time. The machine is automatic — and not really a machine. The chef cooks the burgers in his kitchen and manually operates the machine with a piece of string.

The world is officially coming to an end. You can now get wigs for your cats.

Reuters – Acupuncture brought more relief to people with back pain than standard treatments, whether it was done with a toothpick or a real needle, U.S. researchers said on Monday in a study that raises new questions about how acupuncture works.

For many patients, that benefit lasted for a year, the team reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

UPI – A Montreal musician who, for more than two years, ignored a ticket for feeding a squirrel in a park documented the case with the release of “Squirrelgate.”

The saga wound down Monday when a municipal court judge gave blues musician Bruce Kert four months to pay a $50 fine for tossing a peanut to a squirrel in the borough of Westmount on Sept. 14, 2006, The Gazette newspaper reported.

Westmount has the no-feeding bylaw to discourage the spread of vermin.

Kert, who is also a bicycle repairman, told the newspaper that because he missed several court dates, the original $40 fine had risen to $455. He said he didn’t know why it was reduced to $50 at Monday’s hearing. He also complained he wasn’t first given a warning by the public safety officer who ticketed him, but the judge said that was irrelevant, the report said.

Kert said he has since stopped feeding squirrels, but expresses his frustration in the “Squirrelgate” song on the Soundclick.com Web site.

Telegraph.co.uk – The spider, which measures just a few millimetres across, has developed bizarre markings giving the appearance of a smiling face.

Scientists think the spider, which has the scientific name Theridion grallator and is harmless to humans, has evolved the patterns to confuse predators.
