The world is waiting for the historic moment on Tuesday, January 20th when the United States celebrates a presidential inauguration for the 1st African-American President – Barack Obama – in the country’s short 200+ year history. Preparations have been ongoing since Obama’s defeat of Republican John McCain in the 2008 Presidential Election. The cost of the inauguration is expected to top $150 million. Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden are currently on a 137-mile train ride from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Washington, DC which mirrors the same exact route that President Abraham Lincoln took just before his inauguration in 1861.

The nation was looking forward to President-elect Barack Obama’s first appearance on NBC’s Sunday Morning Talk Show Meet The Press. While many looked forward to hearing from Obama about his recent cabinet appointments and his take on the nation’s continuing economic crisis, Brokaw spent some time on another touchy issue – Obama’s 20-year old, on-and-off, smoking habit. While Obama never really gave a clear answer, it appears that he does still smoke cigarettes from time to time. Given his position and the known-deadly affects from the habit, Brokaw took issue with Obama’s failure to give up the habit for good.

The United States of America elected Barack Obama its 44th President on Tuesday night. Although all voting tallies haven’t been decided, Obama has garnered more than 270 electoral votes, enough to make him the President-Elect. Obama currently has 338 electoral votes, with battleground states of Indiana, North Carolina, Missouri and Montana still too close to call. The polls in Alaska have not yet closed, but Alaska is presumed to go to Republican Presidential Nominee John McCain and his Vice Presidential running mate Sarah Palin, the current Governor of Alaska.

Barack Obama becomes the first African American ever to be elected to the nation’s highest office. In his acceptance speech, Obama emphasized that change has come, but that everyone, including himself and Republicans, will need to work together during the country’s difficult times to get the country back on track.

Obama’s task at hand will not be easy. The country is in the midst of a recession and trying financial crisis, an unpopular war in Iraq that has cost the nation billions of dollars and alienated allies across the globe, and a troubling energy dilemma. With the largest deficit in the nation’s history staring him in the face (caused primarily by the billions of dollars spent on the war in Iraq and Bush’s substantial tax breaks without regard for his reckless “Democratic” spending habits), Obama will not be able to spend his way out of the mess. Obama will need to prioritize his agenda and postpone projects that aren’t 100% necessary to get the country out of its current mess. Obama is sure to surround himself with experienced representatives who will make his transition from US Senator to US President as smooth as possible.

Tonight is election night – what better night to start of our blog posts?

With the troubling economy fresh on people’s minds, which man will be better able to guide the country through the current financial crisis? Is John McCain truly in touch with the American people? Will Barack Obama’s planned tax increases on the wealthy and corporations stunt any growth that economists are predicting in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2009?

These questions will be answered shortly as voting centers begin to close across the country. The first polls have already closed in parts of Indiana, Kentucky and New Hampshire. By 7:00PM EST, all polls in 3 battleground states – Indiana, Virginia and Georgia – will be closed. Two more key states – Ohio and North Carolina – will have all of their polls closed by 7:30PM EST. Ohio is huge for McCain as no Republican nominee has ever won the White House without winning Ohio. Pennsylvania and Florida polls will close by 8:00PM EST. Once we get a sense of where these states are going, it will give us some insight into how the election night will play out. If Obama happens to win more than 1 or 2 of these key states, it could mean a long hill to climb for the best political closer in the game, John McCain.

However it all turns out, the 2008 Presidential election will be a historical one. If Obama wins, the country will have elected its first ever African-American President. If McCain wins, we will have our first ever female Vice President and our oldest first-term President.

Most states expect record voter turnout, so the problems that face the country are clearly being taken seriously by the electorate. Having your voice heard is the only way to achieve positive change in this country. And it appears that most eligible voters are taking that step to have their voices heard. Stay tuned throughout the night for election updates and a detailed analysis of how the President recorded the 270 electoral college votes to secure the White House.
