It wasn&#8217;t until World War II, they say, that the Depression ended and unemployment went down. The idea, of course, is that government spending won&#8217;t do a thing to alleviate our problem or create jobs.</p>
<p>They&#8217;re getting their talking points from Amity Shlaes, the American conservative who wrote an attack on New Deal economic policy a while back that the right just eats up. Texas GOP Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison trotted this horse out in an op-ed yesterday in the Austin American-Statesman. Hutchison, and Shlaes and conservatives generally, are wrong.</p>
