It’s offical! You can tell your kids that you saw history in the making. The Smithsonian wants Aretha Franklin’s Inauguration Day Hat.

Chicago Tribune – Aretha Franklin’s inauguration hat has taken on a life of its own. Now the Smithsonian Institution wants to put it in an exhibit.

The Queen of Soul is considering a Smithsonian request to donate the gray wool hat that caused such a sensation at the Jan. 20 swearing-in of President Barack Obama.

The hat, dominated by an oversized bow adorned with Swarovski crystals, would be displayed alongside several other memorable items from the inauguration, including First Lady Michelle Obama’s inaugural gown.

“I am considering it,” Franklin said in a news release. “It would be hard to part with my chapeau since it was such a crowning moment in history. I would like to smile every time I look back at it and remember what a great moment it was in American and African-American history.”

Amazing that a Hat is almost upstaging our first African-American President. I wonder who or what will get the first wax figure at Madame Tussauds. And I’m not talking about Obama.

Approximately 2 million watched Barack Obama’s Presidential Inauguration on Monday, January 20th. The record crowd crammed into the National Mall composed of the Capitol, White House and Lincoln Memorial. Obama spoke of the resiliency of Americans and the United States of America as it deals with tough economic times, high unemployment rates and international turmoil all across the globe. Obama emphasized that his administration would lead by example by taking full accountability for its actions and by improving dialog with nations and peoples all across the world.

This is a historic day. President Obama was sworn in as our 44th President and President Bush heads home to Texas. The change over was smooth with some minor delays and Obama mishap when swearing in, but overall it was a day that I’m glad to be alive to see with my own eyes.

No matter how you voted or what side of the issues you are on, we as citizens of this great country should be proud. Here is to a hopeful and healing 4 years.
