Sarah Palin to step down as Alaska governor, possibly prepare for 2012 run for president. This is good news… for Tina Fey

Politico – Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has told associates that she will not seek re-election next year, freeing her to pursue a White House bid in 2012, according to two GOP sources.

Palin is to make her decision known later this afternoon from her home in Wasilla with her husband, Todd, and family by her side.

By not running for re-election, Palin liberates herself from the political constraints that come with running for president while still in elected office.

Leaving office at the end of next year, the former vice presidential hopeful will be able to travel the country more freely without facing the sort of repeated ethics inquiries she’s been fending off since returning to Alaska earlier this year.

It’s his party and he can cry if he wants to….

Republican Senator from Alaska, Ted Stevens, turns 85 today and he’s fighting for his political life.

Stevens was convicted last month on seven felony counts in federal court and he is locked in a re-election battle with his Democratic challenger, Mark Begich.

Two weeks after the election, vote counting still continues in Alaska. Begich currently leads by 1,022 votes for Steven’s seat, which he’s had for 40 years. Reports say there are 24,000 votes still left to be counted, as well as absentee ballots from overseas. Still no word on the number of votes stuck in the ’series of tubes’ that Senator Stevens has worked for a lifetime to keep flowing free.

Back in Washington, Senate Republicans could vote to expel Stevens from the senate which could also strip him of his committee assignments if he survives and is re-elected.

Governor Palin, who before the election was very shielded from the media, has been granting back-to-back interviews — including two Wednesday on CNN.

Over the last week the Alaskan Governor has opened her home to reporters serving them moose chili and moose hot dogs as she opens up about her life and what’s next.

I wonder if she shot the moose herself.
